The EU LIFE Yelkouan Shearwater Project
|Yelkouan Shearwater / JBorg|
The EU LIFE Yelkouan Shearwater Project is the largest conservation initiative of its kind in Malta.
This high profile project is a partnership of government authorities and conservation organisations. The partners are contributing their time and expertise and the project is 50% part funded by the European Union LIFE Nature fund. HSBC and MEPA are also contributing. This partnership approach is an innovative and positive way of working in wildlife conservation in the Maltese Islands.
Malta is very important for Yelkouan Shearwaters (Puffinus yelkouan). An estimated 1,500 pairs are known to breed here, which equals approximately 10% of the world’s Yelkouan Shearwater population.
The partnership is working together to reverse population declines and reduce future threats to the birds. The overall aim of the project is to create the right conditions at the project site and beyond in order to attract breeding pairs and ensure they can raise their chicks successfully.
The project will run until 2010 and will focus on protecting birds at the largest breeding site, Rdum tal-Madonna, in the north of Malta. We will take action to improve the area for the benefit of shearwaters and other wildlife as well as for local people and visitors. More
