Seasonal Field Worker

LIFE+ Malta Seabird Project (LIFE10 NAT/MT/090)

BirdLife Malta

Malta is host to internationally important breeding grounds of the Yelkouan shearwater, Cory’s shearwater and the European Storm Petrel. In order for Malta to meet its obligations to the EU, BirdLife Malta has launched an EU LIFE+ project to collect data on the distribution of Maltese seabirds at sea to identify IBAs (Important Bird Areas).  This project is now seeking seasonal field assistants (full-time) to carry out boat surveys in the Mediterranean, and to assist in other aspects of field work.

The successful candidate will have sound bird identification skills, and previous experience of working long hours off-shore on board small vessels.  Previous experience or a working knowledge of the European Seabirds at Sea (ESAS) methodology would be an advantage.  The surveys are carried out over 14 days per month, depending on weather conditions.  The field assistants will have free time between surveys however flexibility is required to accommodate sufficient number of days at sea monthly.

The positions (two) are seasonal (8 months) with a start date in March 2012, with interviews held in February.  To apply, submit a CV and a covering letter, with contact details for two referees, to blmseabird@gmail.com by 10th February 2012.
