I have just Googled upon "FALLEN ANGELS" - evoking despair and anger and shame in a catalogue of shot birds. The birds are familiar enough: Night Heron, Swift, Hoopoe, M Harrier. Likewise the ongoing tragedy. The artist, lives in Florida. I recommend BirdLife to capitalise from these images that show what hunting is all about.

Hi. I have just got back from a great visit to Malta. Though it isnt the best time for bird watching atm, i still got a few nice photos. Went there with my family, so most of the time, i was spending swimming, reading and relaxing. Got photos of a Sardinian Warbler and a Blue Rock Thrush. So while i was looking for any kind of info on the species i got on camera, i stumbled on this site.... Must say! -Great site, thanks for the hard work ppl put into these things.
Best regards Niclas Thomsen

I think that every environmentalist needs to look at this idea. About 20 years ago I undertook a project to evaluate why we fail to address the perils we inflict upon the planet and onto one another. After all of that time I think there is a solution to the dilemma and it is not really so difficult to comprehend and resolve. The public has become too detached from the process of democracy. We allow 1% of the population to control the nomination process for all candidates, the development of all political ideology, policy etc. The better part of this one percent of the population has selfish motives for being engaged in the political arena. There are the businessmen, new citizens, car dealers, contractors, developers, and theocrats etc., all there for their own interests. Those with altruistic ideology are very much in the minority. If we can get as little as 2% of the population in every country to become part of a fraternity herein called Civis Mundi (world citizens) we might have enough influence in every democratic government to inject some public sanity into political ideology and policy just as it was always intended to be. It is fully understood that everyone is not going to join a political party but at www.civismundi.net it is shown how everyone can do something constructive towards this worldwide threat to humanity and the planet. Please consider the consequences of doing nothing. Sincerely Matthew Foster (civis mundi sum)

Dear BirdLife Malta Staff,
As I have received at home your "bird's eye view" magazine some days ago (issue 28) it should be clear that I write to you as a supporter and a friend! However, please note my serious objection, as a BLM-member, against the tone and some of the content in the article "road to perdition", on page 4&5 of this winter's publication and various press releases and/or statements made in recent days.
Although I am only a recent member of BLM and have planted with my kids only a few trees in Foresta (phase-1 of a Natura 2000 site), I am a -taxpaying-member of the Maltese society and resident for over 14 years, beside a Maltese citizen for the last 5 year. As a citizen I am very much against hunting and even more in favor of forestation projects, but I am also in favor of beach rebuilding projects¹ and for improved mobility², meaning safer and better, not necessarily more, roads!
1) As -also still- a Dutch national I understand very well that unless one has no choice, it is not a good idea to have a (main) road so close to the sea. This is not only applicable to Ghadira but to many parts of the so called 'regional road' (National Road-1) from Bahar-ic-Caghaq to Kennedy Grove, but also between St. Paul's Bay and Xemxija. By no-means a specialist in this field myself, the beach and land reclamation projects undertaken in the Netherlands are world renowned. Admittedly there are considerable differences between the North Sea and the Mediterranean, nevertheless the knowledge and experience of the Dutch industry in this field of dredging and sea construction is also world renowned. The Dutch know also that nothing is forever and that 'the sea gives and the sea takes', meaning: any intervention needs to be maintained. 2) As a light railway system is very likely beyond our scale of economy, arguing in favor of improving mobility means per definition arguing in favor of better and safer roads. However, this does not mean therefore also being in favor of (more) cars! Au contraire, with already way too many cars on this small island I cannot wait for the highly overdue overhaul of way outdated public transport system! Therefore busses, large or small, electrical, on LPG or hybrid, should have a preference, as should bicycles.
So, with my two main suggestions to the Nation elaborated upon above, I would like to go back to my 'bone of contention' to the article and argue that BLM, as many other NGO's, fallen in the trap of confusing Conservation of Nature with being CONSERVATIVE against any progressive development! Clearly I do not like to read that BLM, who have mine and many others' support in the fight to protect the birds [migrating et al], the liberation of our country sites and reforestation projects, is trying to fool its supporters, friends and the Maltese in general, that a 15 - 20m wide road, cut in an over 500m wide future forest or nature development area "will destroy" the whole area!? As we all can see in the other media, the road will not 'cut across' but cross over -like a bridge- the Ghadira Valley; and by-the-way is the photo (or sub-text) on page 5 correct? It looks to me the Pwales Valley!?
My point is not that this is no BLM business, surely we, as BLM, should be consulted -and we should do so actively if we are not involved at an early stage- but we should not with all means [including 'political' type of arguing] try to stop such an overdue improvement of our transport network without proposing alternatives and studying the overarching issues.
I look forward to contribute further on the BLM opinion forming process.
Best regards,
HW (Swieqi)

Malta is now renowned as one of the top countries for illegal hunting. Something has to be done quickly because it is already too late and it is a shame that this has been going on such a large scale.

There is no need for birdwatchers to enter private land to watch birds. Birdwatching can be enjoyed from country lanes, protected areas, coastal strips, gardens, and public land.
The issue is not this. It is illegal bird hunting - on both private and public land. This we must stop.
